Foxtrot.Uniform.Charlie.Kilo......

....repeated very loudly and passionately.

At 10.37am this morning, on the Florey bitumen cycle path, while running, I fell flat on my face, with a sickening thud. Actually, my face is fine, its my knees, elbows and hipbone that are grazed and sore. My right knee is also swollen - I landed heavily on it.

So how did it happen? I have no idea. One minute I am running along comfortably listening to Flagpole Sitta by Harvey Danger on the ipod, next thing I know I am lying face down on the cycle path, too stunned for words. I do recall my initial thought was, thank goodness the ipod is ok (because it was still playing the damn song!). Then I checked my garmin, and apart from the indignity of it telling me I was now about 17m behind Garmin Girl, it too was ok. Next, my brand new sunnies - check, no they're fine too. Then the pain and the realisation of what happened sunk in and I moved - after all, I didn't need a cyclist bearing down on me at that point.

I started limping back home (I had only gone 1.5km!) but had only gone about 50m before I had to sit down. I thought I was going to pass out - everything was going blurry, I had got very clammy and there was a strange buzzing in my head. I also thought I was going to throw up. Not good. So I sat on the side of the path with my head between my knees and resisted the urge to lie down. I didn't have my phone with me - after all, I was only planning on running 8km. Eventually I decided to move again and get home - with a horde of horrible little black flies following me. I must've looked a sight - bloodied knees and elbows, blood dripping down my right shin. I noticed I was getting some surreptitious glances my way from other people out for their daily walk.

I finally made it home and then had to sit down again - same faint feeling, and feeling nauseous. Then I made a strong coffee and had some chocolate (Lindt 75% dark chocolate no less) - that made me feel a bit better! Son #2 wandered inside at this point and I displayed my wounds - he was very impressed! Son #1, when he finally arose and was in a communicative mood, lectured me about being more careful when out running and that I should always take my phone.

I am supposed to be doing my 26km run tomorrow morning - I will make up my mind when I get up in the morning and check out my right knee. I think today was one of those days when I just should have stayed in bed. :-(

Foxtrot. Uniform. Charlie. Kilo.

I'm really sorry to hear about your fall and that you made it home OK. I am however really disgusted that none of the walkers who saw you bothered to ask if you are ok. Grrr.

Get some ice on the wounds. I hope your knee is ok for tomorrow.

J

PS I did some Devil Crunches after reading your comment on my blog, yikes !

Oh CJ! That looks absolutely terrible, you poor thing!!
Didn't ANYONE ask if you needed any help? That's really awful. I hope it heals really quickly.

First the goldfish, and now this. I hope this isn't a long term complication and I hope you will be back on your feet in no time.

Shocking about the walkers.

Youch!!! Stay safe Ms CJ! I can endorse the laser eye surgery if you are contemplating it... ;)

Ouch.

And the knees look awful.

Hope the knees (and elbows) feel better after a decent rest.

Ouch again.

Ouch, CJ.

Not sick, but not very well at all.

The coffee and chocolate treatment seems to work well. Did wonders for me when I came off my bike last year.

Remember to be realistic when you assess how you are feeling tomorrow morning. We all tend to assume we are bullet proof before the start of a run.

Cheers,
Ben

Did you cry???? I am such a baby... I swear if I hit the deck the walkers would know about it :-) I hope you pull up ok... but take it easy! Yes by the sounds of you day you would have gone in the river ;-)

Take care!

Oh you poor thing :-( I hope it isn't as nasty as it looks.

Funny how you worried about everything else first!

So, do you normally take your phone on longer runs if you are alone?

CJ, you could get a part in Braindead with blood like that.

Nice, very nice. You can go and boast about it at work now. You might need to get the latest Bloodhound Gang album on the ipod.

Ouch and double ouch! That looks very nasty! Can't believe no-one offered you any assistance. It certainly gives you a nasty shock though landing on your face when you think you're just having a nice run! Happened to me a few years ago in the middle of Centennial Park with lots of people around to witness my embarassment!

I'm glad Lindt cured all!

You poor thing.

Ditto the Bennyr's comments. Maybe it would be wise to rest up tomorrow. From first hand experience I guarantee your scraped bits will be sorer in the morning.

WOAH!!! I'm glad you weren't hurt (badly) and that nothing was broken (bones, ipods, etc.)

I do love how the picture was taken BEFORE you cleaned up your wounds. =)

And I agree with all the ouches having seen the result a day later! Wise decision not to run today (Sunday) and by the look of those knees another few days rest won't hurt either. Keep checking that left one. It looks nasty. The sea water at the coast will do you a world of good. See you at brekkie tomorrow - enjoyed your company at coffee today!

Owee!!! Take care of those knees...skipping the long run might not be a bad idea...

This happened to me 3X during this past summer. One was during a 10 mile run. I had about .1 miles to go and was practically sprinting - felt great and then boom. Fell. ON a busy street none the less. I finished my run with blood pouring down my leg (from my knee.) Ugh. Sorry. Hopefully it is nothing more than a trip. Ice. Ibuprofen. Rest.

Oh CJ you are such a brave woman just thinking about your running of tomorrow morining.
I can't believe that the first think that came to your mind was the ipod... the most valuable treasure are your legs.
I really hope tomorrow you feel better and that this won't give you any further problems.

OMG! CJ, that looks painful! You need to make a poster out of this picture or something - you're hardcore ;)
