Dumb things #2

Decided to give swim squad another go tonight - the ear was ok and I felt fine. Hmmm...

Stats:
Session - Swim squad
Distance - 1.8km

Started off fine (this is starting to sound all too familiar!) though even in the warm-up (800m) I was having trouble breathing to both sides without taking on water or running out of breath. Breastroke defeated me - that would have to be the most stupidest swimming stroke ever invented (because I can't do it to save myself).

The main set included sets of reps of 100m efforts with 20sec rest intervals. I could do 2 reps but not the third - that's ok, two reps will do. By the time I got to the 300m 'cruise' swim I was exhausted and decided to call it a night.
Got home and really couldn't be bothered cooking so finished off the last slice of chocolate mousse cake! Very nutritious!

Today is also the start of my marathon training - its a rest day! Good way to start.

Tomorrow:
(am) cycle
(pm) run

Ouch - that swim session sounds worse than my run session and that's saying something!! You are so brave to swim with that lot. I miss our Monday breakfasts!

I am TERRIBLE at breastroke too. I can do it but I am like 100X slower than everyone else.

For stupid ppl like me, it is a God send ;)...

I am starting to learn to breathe on both sides in freestyle as well. My left side is horrible, i sink, my head rotate weird and i chug down lots of chlorine water....hmmm.chlorine

Yes CJ, breast stroke is by far the most stupidest stroke. Butterfly of course isn't swimming at all - its more like a controlled epileptic fit. ;)

I'd have to agree - chocolate mouse cake and a rest day sounds like the perfect way to start a marathon campaign ;-)

What scares me about that swim squad session is that the warm up was 800 metres, that's about all I can manage at the best of times! I do breathe on both sides though but I'm not sure it works too well for me. I end up with a headache. Takes a bit of getting used to though and one side is always worse than the other.

Your marathon programme sounds good, I might consider that for my next race training. Chocolate and rest.. yum!

Why not make it 2 days rest? You are going to be putting in some hard yards if you are commencing the big M prep. Starting fresh and healthy is an advantage.

Oh yeah - it's not just breastroke - all swimming sucks :-)

Great to see you persevering with the squads - they can be a tough bunch from my experience, but these sessions will pay big dividends eventually.

(I agree with you about breaststroke)

We're a pretty thick lot, us runners. Our bodies tell us in no uncertain terms "Don't do this. You will hurt". And then the next day we think "Ooh, I feel better - I must go and trash my body again!"

We've all done all of the Dumb Things. Enjoy your rest day. I hope you are right for your next session.

Oh, and breast stroke. It's for frogs, not humans. I'd rather dog paddle.
